Week 23We will be exploring 3 cities from the middle east region in terms of population, popular jobs in the city as well as places of interest. After that students will create an advert for the city they find most interesting.
Once completed we will do a case study of the working conditions of workers in a pre-selected region in America. We will also compare those conditions to the working conditions of people here in Qatar. Science & Humanities FairWe will also be preparing towards the Science and Humanities Fair which will take place on Thursday, March 10.
We have some students who will present the work we did at the fair and so will take time to make sure they are well prepared for this. |
Week 10
In week 10 we start an exploration into culture and how the meeting of different cultures changes a community, a culture, a region. We look at how different cultures become a part of us and how they add value. We will also be discussing misconceptions, identify and maintaining the values of a culture.
We look at a cultural conversation, "Aber", that took place between students from America and Qatar at the Qatar Foundation International during 2013.

Week 9
Students will have opportunity to apply their knowledge and skill by using clues and topical maps to find specific places.
They will them be taken through an audio journey in which they will imagine and experience a new place. The final part of the week will give them opportunity to review what they have learned in Chapter 2. |
Week 4-8
Students will apply basic map skills to learn how to identify regions in the world, a country or an area. In the Preview activity, they draw a map of their own home showing its different "regions". In a Social Studies Skill Builder, they interpret a series of special-purpose maps depicting five regions of the United States, a large country with a variety of natural regions.

Looking at global comparisons:
One comparison we explored was looking at where the worlds rain-forests were situated, comparing the size of these areas with the rest of the earth's land surface.

During one of the lessons in this chapter we discussed how the World is divided into different time zones.
Linking in with Math and large numbers, we looked at the world's population and in real time how frequently someone dies or a baby is born. Click here to see the real time bird and death map of the world. |
Geography terminology:
Week 2-3
An introduction to the social studies with particular interest in the jobs of the ECONOMIST, the GEOGRAPHER, the HISTORIAN and the POLITICAL SCIENTIST.
We will look at how each jobs works together. We will also study a working example of How the Geographer, Political Scientist and Economist worked together learn about a powerful 1,300 year old American Indian city. Learners will be writing a Social Studies Assessment on Tuesday, September 22.

Week one is an introduction to our character skill program that we run at the school. We use specific character traits to encourage learners through positive affirmation to act in a way that will develop a positive and healthy learning environment. In year 5 we approach this with our Super-Me set of exercises.
